Workshop Suenaga & Gardener Ceramics

Probably the most famous atelier in the city, though not the first, is celebrating 40 years of history. With a variety of utilitarian and decorative pieces. I won't judge the prices, because, beyond the long artisanal process that creates unique pieces, there's the artistic value and the value of the Suenaga and Jardineiro name that creates the pieces. A visit is a must, and even better if you can attend a Noborigama kiln opening ceremony. An interesting setting, the rustic, natural, spacious, and open space, surrounded by greenery, integrates exhibition and sales space with the kiln and logs creating a harmonious composition. Everything is very organized and professional, with a trained staff to welcome, assist, and provide explanations to customers. The website and social media channels offer updated content, including the event schedule.

The Noborigama kiln opening ceremony takes place with three chamber opening sessions: at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. The event takes place four or five times a year and goes beyond the opening of the kiln itself. Giltaro Suenaga, Gardener, begins with an explanation of the process, from the selection and preparation of the raw materials to the final product. Throughout the presentation, there are demonstrations of the lathe and enameling by Kitaro (Giltaro's brother), and painting by Kimiko Suenaga and her daughter-in-law. It's impossible not to be reminded of the movie Ghost when seeing the lathe in motion and marvel at the delicacy and precision of Kimiko's brush movements. I attended a Noborigama Kiln Opening during the Cunha Ceramics Festival (June 2025). The studio was packed (opening at 10 a.m.), and it was difficult to find a seat. However, the crowd, the history of the place, and the technical explanations by Giltaro Jardineiro (son of Kimiko Suenaga and Gilberto Jardineiro) created a wonderful atmosphere. Kitaro Suenaga demonstrated the lathe and enameling, and Kimiko demonstrated piece decoration. Wine and hors d'oeuvres were also available. A must-see.

The guy who helps us is a sweetheart! Super friendly and attentive! He explained the history of the studio and the ceramics industry in Cunha! The pieces are extremely expensive; we imagine it must have been a lot of work and effort!

We spent the week in Cunha, and most of the studios weren't open. This was one of the few that was. It's very close to downtown, on the opposite side of the highway. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a date for the course. Good selection and in-house production. Medium to high prices.
