Mercado Ver-o-Peso is a large, historic open-air market in Belém, Brazil, offering a wide variety of goods including food, medicinal herbs, clothing, and handicrafts.
It’s known for regional cuisine like fried fish with açaí.
While a must-visit for many tourists, some find it crowded, dirty, and smelly.

Ver-o-Peso Market, Latin America’s largest open-air market, has been a vibrant spot in Belém since 1901. Here, you’ll find a diverse range of goods, from fresh fish and meat to clothing, medicinal plants, and unique foods brought from the Amazon islands. One of the region’s most iconic dishes—fried fish served with açaí—is a must-try here.
Ver-o-Peso is also an architectural gem, made up of several historic buildings that add to the local atmosphere. This market is a rich blend of culture, history, and cuisine, making it a must-visit destination in Belém!

The market is huge with many produce and fresh meat items to purchase, but it is STINKY with many vultures hanging around, hoping to get scraps of meat! It didn't look entirely hygienic so purchase and eat at your own risk!

It is a cool place with lots of different things to buy and see (including regional food, fresh fruits, souvenirs, and clothing). It is difficult to enjoy because of the crowd and horrendous smell.
