I had a lovely day out here today despite the rain. The farm is beautiful, diverse and colourful with lots of unusual species and interesting butterflies. There was a lovely, friendly man working there who took me through the farm, explaining things simply and pointing out fascinating species in a very accessible way, I definitely didn't expect to feel so welcome on my walk through Sydney park.

From Sydney City Farm "Sydney City Farm is an urban agriculture project nurtured by the City of Sydney in Sydney Park. It's a place to learn about urban agriculture and sustainable food production. Everyone is welcome to visit the farm at anytime, it is open to the public all day every day. Everything grown a the farm is nurtured by volunteers, and the food harvested is donated to local food charities to support local residents in need. Volunteers work alongside an experienced horticulturalist and learn how to grow food in the city. Join a free guided walk to see whats growing this season. Come along to a community open day to learn about ecology, seed saving or urban agriculture. Book into one of our popular gardening workshops for hands on learning.

It's a great opportunity to learn about vegetable and herb gardening. It's well organised and love that I don't need to be on a community committee, just turn up without any other obligations. Also excellent that produce that is the result of volunteer work goes to charity.

If you live in Sydney but crave the opportunity to work in a farm setting surrounded by greenery then the Sydney City Farm volunteer program may be worth checking out. You don't have to know anything when you start out because Jon the farm manager and other experienced volunteers take you under their wing and show you what to do. I started volunteering about six months ago and have learned so much already - from how to plant seeds to composting and harvesting etc. It's great spending time with like-minded volunteers getting your hands in the soil. The harvested food is sent to charities such as the Asylum Seekers Centre.
